In the distant future, humanity's dreams of interstellar travel have crumbled in the face of a ruthless alien invasion. These beings, having crossed over from an alternate dimension accidentally, brought with them advanced technology, as well as a new karma based system on how people are judged. They left humanity semi autonomous, visiting only once a year to collect resources,  as they could not stay for long in our dimension. People were free to do what they wanted, but if their morality score was low, they would be punished. In order to get their morality score up they had to work for a cause that benefitted the alien beings. The machine that warps them here requires immense energy, all of the power collected by a dyson sphere. When the O-type main sequence star fluctuates in its luminosity, the machine becomes unstable and they risk losing contact with their command center. Therefore, they are only able to visit for brief periods of time when they predict the star is at its brightest. The planet is governed by autonomous robots set up by the aliens to oversee and control humanity while they are unable to visit.

The karma based judgment system works on the basis of a neural implant, a manifestation of oppression, embedded in the minds of newborn children. The implant contains a self destruct mechanism, exploding when attempted to be removed, killing the person it was embedded in. Because of the unique hivemind way the aliens think, this device could only  judge people by what they truly believed to be right. If one's beliefs justified heinous acts like murder, they remained unpunished by the system. Thus, the aliens made it a top priority on Earth to force morals on developing children.

An annual morality exam was set up to weed out the immoral humans who could get away with doing bad things. With advanced lie detection methods ensuring people could not lie their way out of punishment. If a person is found to have a low morality score, they are taken to a concentration camp where they are forced to work and eventually become gladiators for the entertainment of the alien beings. The initial punishment for low morality was an increase in their surrounding gravity, an inconvenience that forced people to get their morality score up. For repeat offenders, they are warped to an alternate dimension where a nuclear war occurred on a planet similar to Earth to make an example of what happens if you don’t contribute to the cause.

After centuries of oppression, a rebel emerged, inspired by the legacy of Ernesto Guevara, he wanted his people to be free, despising the fact his life was  being controlled by alien beings. He came up with a plan, intending to destroy several communication posts to disrupt the relay between the autonomous robots that mined away at our planet’s resources. He was betrayed by one of his co-conspirators and was sentenced to have his gravity increased for 40 years or until he got his morality score up.

Despite being caught and punished, within three months, he was caught again, this time attempting to construct an improvised explosive device. As this was his second offense, he was going to be warped to the nuclear wasteland but as he is about to be warped, he throws an improvised explosive device he was carrying with him and it explodes just in time to cause the machine to malfunction, warping him to an alternate timeline where the universe’s laws are different. There he meets a powerful being, a Boltzmann brain. A being powerful enough to manipulate the universe’s four fundamental forces at its will.

The Boltzmann Brain predicted this event occurring and knew what the protagonist wanted. It was going to give him the same power in exchange for something. He would have to repeat his actions for eternity, in a cycle of ouroboros. The protagonist agrees and the Boltzmann Brain grants him the power to free humanity.
